THE COMMITTEE had under consideration copies of corres- pondence regarding the proposal to institute a direct wireless service between Hong Kong and Japan (I.C.C.1386).
SIR PHILIP CUNLIFFE-LISTER said that the idea of a direct
wireless service between Hong Kong and Japan had been under
consideration for some time and that the matter was now at a
standstill until such time as the future of the Radio Telegraph Administration in Hong Kong had been decided. It was shortly
proposed, he understood, to transfer the wireless service from the Government of Hong Kong to Imperial and International Communications Ltd. The Colonial Office suggested that it would be better to wait until the transfer was completed before
any new services were undertaken.
MR. PHILLIPS said that the Post Office most strongly
supported the view of the Colonial Office.
MR. VERNON said he had had an interview with the repre- sentative of the Company and there were really two major points. The first concerned the provision of a high power station at Hong Kong and also a high power station at Singapore, and the second was the question of the Company taking over the Hong Kong wireless services. The Company were anxious to proceed with the second scheme, but would like to leave the big scheme, that is the provision within two years of high power wireless stations at Hong Kong and Singapore, to be determined by general considerations of Financial policy. He had asked the Company to submit these proposals formally in writing, and he was inclined to agree that it might be better from every point of view to defer
proceeding with the more expensive scheme of
providing these high power
stations.
